The blog David on Formosa began in February 2005. The blog was originally hosted at Blogger, but moved to its own domain name (blog.taiwan-guide.org) and the WordPress platform in August 2006. I took the blog offline in June 2017. In April and May 2020 I copied some articles from the original blog here and also added some other material related to work I have done in the field of Taiwan Studies.
I graduated from the International Master’s Program in Taiwan Studies at National Chengchi University (NCCU; 國立政治大學) in 2010. My thesis was titled, “Indigenous Rights in Taiwan and the Smangus Case”. I also wrote a book chapter based on my thesis research titled “Nation vs. Tradition: Indigenous Rights and Smangus” which was published in the book Taiwan Since Martial Law. After graduating I worked at the Research Centre for Austronesian Peoples at Providence University (靜宜大學). While there I did fieldwork and research on the impacts of typhoons on indigenous peoples in Taiwan.
Although I am no longer blogging or writing about Taiwan I still regularly post about Taiwan on Mastodon. My Twitter account, @davidonformosa, is now dormant. I have a Chinese-language blog about Taiwan that is no longer being updated.
